SECONDARY CESAREAN SECTIONS POSE RISK FACTORS

"(NaturalNews) Doctors warn most expectant mothers with a previous Cesarean section about the risks of vaginal birth following a Cesarean (VBAC) but not about the risks of multiple Cesarean sections both to mother or her baby. The primary cause for concern during VBAC is uterine rupture, which could lead to the deaths of mother and baby. When told of that possibility, and often under pressure from her doctor, many women opt for a scheduled repeat Cesarean section.

That a Cesarean section is major surgery is often downplayed. Yet, risks to the mother include increased risk of emergent hysterectomy, hemorrhage, organ damage, infection with increased risks of rehospitalization, and cardiopulmonary and thromboembolic conditions." COMMENTARY: Then there complications for the baby as well. Hmmm. Yet many obstetricians continue to push for cesareans instead of vaginal births. Once they get a woman to have her primary cesarean, she is at risk for all of these complications since most obstetricians will not attend a VBAC. The best recourse is to do all you can to avoid that first cesarean if you can. If it is necessary to birth surgically, seek out advice on how best to get a VBAC.

COMMENTARY:APRIL IS CESAREAN AWARENESS MONTH

The cesarean rate now averages 31.8% in the United States, according to the Center for Disease Control. That means one in three women birthing in the hospital will have a cesarean. Some individual hospitals have rates as high as 80%, according to the film, Pregnant in America.

Despite the attempts of obstetricians and the media to say this is driven by mothers' choice, many women are given no other option, especially if they have had a previous cesarean section. Many hospitals have banned VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean) outright, and many more have de facto bans, which means that although the hospital technically has not banned this type of birth, they have no physicians on staff who will allow them.

To find out more about how to prevent a cesarean section or to get a VBAC, visit ICAN (International Cesarean Awareness Network).

ROCKET FUEL CHEMICAL FOUND IN BABY FORMULA

Update: The link is no longer available to the article.

ATLANTA – Traces of a chemical used in rocket fuel were found in samples of powdered baby formula, and could exceed what's considered a safe dose for adults if mixed with water also contaminated with the ingredient, a government study has found.

The study by scientists at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention looked for the chemical, perchlorate, in different brands of powdered baby formula. It was published last month, but the Environmental Working Group — a Washington, D.C.-based advocacy organization — issued a press release Thursday drawing attention to it.

The chemical has turned up in several cities' drinking water supplies. It can occur naturally, but most perchlorate contamination has been tied to defense and aerospace sites. (more to be seen at the article link)

COMMENTARY: What now? At the same time that the Atlantic Monthly and the NY Times are publishing articles by breastfeeding mothers that they hate nursing and why shouldn't they use formula, the CDC is discovering a chemical used in rocket fuel is in formula. There is also an interesting video making the rounds showing all the chemicals put into formula... there isn't a trace of food in the lot. :P When will it get through these people's heads that breastmilk is what babies are meant to eat?
