Fun Stuff
You can't be serious all the time! Pregnancy can be fun too. This is the place to find recommendations for fun movies, cartoons and other fun stuff that is related to pregnancy, labor, birth and parenting. There are lots of fun things to do besides picking out names when you're expecting. If you have anything you would like to contribute, drop us a line! | MOVIES Nine Months This movie stars Hugh Grant and Julianne Moore as a couple who find out they are expecting, when it was really the last thing on his mind. The movie follows them as they try to come to terms with the pregnancy. Robin Williams plays what is probably the funniest obstetrician I've ever seen. Other featured performers are Jeff Goldblum and Joan Cusack. Junior This one blurs the gender roles a bit as Arnold Schwarzenegger becomes the world's first pregnant man. Starring Emma Thompson and Danny DeVito, this is a charming movie that reverses the roles in pregnancy and birth. One of my favorites. Father of the Bride, Part II This classic with Steve Martin must cope with both his wife (Diane Keaton) and his daughter having babies at the same time. Full of laughter and some sweet moments, this movie is one I recommend. I don't care for the sudden drama at the end where his wife ends up with a cesarean, but then, I didn't get to write it. Still rates several stars in my book. Parenthood Another Steve Martin classic stars Mary Steenburgen, Dianne Wiest, Tom Hulce and a whole lot of other great actors. Lots of laughs and poignant moments. My favorite scenes are towards the end. Don't want to give it away. :) Cheaper By the Dozen This is one of my favorites. It doesn't matter if you choose to watch the original black and white version or the new one with Steve Martin... either way you'll enjoy life in a large family. | Baby Mama We just saw this one. Even though they make fun of going without medications and such, it ends up being a rather touching tale. Fun to watch.
MOVIES THAT EVERY PARENT SHOULD SEE BEFORE GIVING BIRTH Pregnant in America: A Nation's Miscarriage This well-done documentary by an expectant father features interviews with many well-known birth experts like Dr. Marsden Wagner, Barbara Harper, Joseph Chilton Pearce, Ina May Gaskin, Robbie Davis-Floyd, and Dr. Michel Odent. They travel all over the USA and even visit Holland to try to understand why our cesarean rate averages 30% (one hospital in Florida is mentioned at the end as having an 80% rate). One couple that was interviewed chose to birth in Canada because it was more cost-effective. Full of passion and great information, Pregnant in America should be seen by everyone. It is available at Netflix. The Business of Being Born This introduction to homebirth produced by Ricki Lake is eye-opening for anyone who has never considered birthing outside of a hospital. While it has garnered criticism for the director's baby having to transport to the hospital to be born by cesarean, I see it as illustrating how safe homebirth is... they recognized a problem, and had plenty of time to get to the hospital and get the treatment that was needed. This film is available at Netflix. Birth As We Know It This stunning documentary shows us that birth is not to be feared, but to be celebrated. With amazing cinematography, beautiful orchestration and a soothing narrative, this film will open your eyes to the beauty of birth. What Babies Want This amazing film talks about what babies experience in the womb, during birth and how they attempt to tell us their stories after they are born. It opened my eyes to a whole new way of perceiving my own little ones and their births. Narrated by Noah Wyle. The Births of Psalm & Zoya This short film was made by a couple to document the unassisted birth of their twins. It is amazing to see these two births, one of which was breech.
CARTOONS My favorite online childbirth cartoon is Hathor, the Cow Goddess. She not only brings humor to some serious situations, but she also brings important issues in breastfeeding, homebirth, homeschooling and childbirth to the attention of many. I had the honor of meeting her at the Trust Birth Conference in March of 2008. Yay, Heather! You're one of my heroes! Heather Cushman-Dowdee now has another comic called Mama Is.... This comic has been telling the story of her latest pregnancy. It is so fun!
OTHER FUN STUFF This is just a fun place to visit. Granted, they have photos of all sorts of cakes for baby showers that show pregnant bellies and babies too... take a look at Cake Wrecks.
