HOW TO BE AN HONEST LISTENER

Presented by John Rakestraw

INTRODUCTION

Honest listeners allow others to express their wants, feelings, thoughts and opinions clearly and effectively. But there is more to listening and understanding when others talk to us. When a person decides to talk to another person, they do so to fulfill a need. That person wants something.

The word, honest, means to me someone who is honorable in principles, intentions, and actions; upright and fair; this person is sincere, genuine, respectable and humble. The word, listener, is the active deed and effort to hear something, to pay attention and to heed what is being communicated.

I’ve tried to put all these practices to work in my personal and professional lives. I want to be up front that I have to remind myself to reread them all the time. Listening and comprehending all that is being said to you is a lifelong vocation at best. When we get lazy and let our minds wonder, we lose the talker’s points and our own abilities to truly be of help to anyone. As the old saying states,” if you want to be loved, you must give love”... “if you want people to listen, you must also listen”.

I hope that you will write back to us at contact us, with your ideas on honest listening. There is always room for more info.

Keep your ears open,

John Rakestraw
